The project was to construct an original Gerrit Rietveld Red Blue Chair as well as reproductions using new materials and joinery methods. The original chair was constructed from baltic birch plywood and quarter sawn white oak milled from a tree felled on UVA's grounds, while the reproductions were constructed using 3030 aluminum extrusion, high density polyethelyne sheets, Flexcraft perforated square steel tubes, and carbon steel sheets. Other designs were explored, including reproductions made from electrical conduit and construction waste, though were not constructed. The project was inspired by the furniture practices of Tom Sachs and someparts studio, along with DIY machines such as CNC or 3D printers that use aluminum extrusion rigid frames. Rietveld's Military Stool was also constructed.
