Moabit Powerplant Transformations and Analysis (2022 - 2045)

Following the European energy crisis of 2023, Germany sought to nationalize the country’s energy grid to ensure adequate access to energy for all citizens and a smooth transition to renewable energy by 2035. In 2025, the energy grid was nationalized and the federal government and local Berlin governments partnered for an initiative to reclaim the land and architecture of power plants that are fully or partially decommissioned during the transition to renewables. After their useful lives are over, fifteen active power plants in Berlin can be appropriated by the surrounding communities to provide new public space based on what they need. Each power plant will be guided by the local community during the transition from private and closed off to public and open. The project focuses on two plants, Lichterfelde and Moabit.
